Blepharoplasty

Oculoplastics at Union Square Eye Care

Your eyes are the focal point and one of the first thing others notice about you. They communicate your feelings and affect your entire appearance. Sagging or drooping eyelids, undereye bags and fatty deposits are an age-defining feature that prompts men and women to consider eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty.

What is blepharoplasty?

It is surgery to remove excess skin on the upper eyelid to improve vision or cosmetic appearance. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is surgery to reduce under-eye bags and puffiness. Blepharoplasty can revitalize your eyes and restore a youthful, refreshed appearance.

Reasons for blepharoplasty

As we age, upper eyelid skin loses elasticity and begins to sag and droop. Patients seek blepharoplasty to reduce overhanging skin to improve vision that is obstructed by heavy eyelids and to enhance their appearance. Drooping of the upper eyelid (ptosis) caused by weak eyelid muscles is treated with an eyelid lift. Read more about Ptosis and functional blepharoplasty. Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat to tighten and lift sagging skin and wrinkles around the eyes for aesthetic rejuvenation.

Lower eyelid surgery removes excess fatty deposits, fine lines and wrinkles, undereye bags and puffiness, and tightens loose skin. The result is cosmetic improvement, revitalized eyes and restoration of a youthful, alert and well-rested appearance. If you suffer from sagging or drooping upper eyelids, excess eyelid skin, puffy eyelids, bags below the eyes or wrinkles, our advanced eyelid procedures can help.

The blepharoplasty procedure

At Union Square Eye Care we offer eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia. Incisions are made within the natural folds or creases of the upper lids. For lower lid surgery, the incision is made along the lash line. If the problem is primarily puffiness due to bulging fat pads, the incision may be made inside the lower lid.

What are the risks?

Risks are minimal but can include scarring, poor healing, infection, dry eye and persistent under eye fatty deposits.

Recovery

For upper blepharoplasty, there will be stitches that are removed after a week. Most patients can return to work within a week to 10 days. Light activity may be recommended for a short period of time after surgery.

Who is a good candidate?

Generally, good candidates are healthy and have realistic expectations. The only way to know if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with  our eyelid surgeons.

We perform both upper and lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and also use BOTOX® to turn back the hands of time and give you a rested, refreshed and more youthful look.
